Happy Birthday Yogi Bear!

It's hard to believe our SMARTER THAN THE AVERAGE BEAR™ is celebrating another birthday! In honor of Yogi Bear's™ birthday, we wanted to share a little more about our favorite bear. Also, learn how to celebrate with us at our campground in Robert, Louisiana!

Yogi Bear—The Cartoon

Yogi Bear was created by William Hanna and Joseph Barbera. These two great minds aimed to create cartoons the whole family would enjoy during a time when TVs were just starting to become part of homes around the country. The Hanna-Barbera team is responsible for bringing us classic characters such as The Flintstones™, Scooby Doo™, and The Jetsons™.

Yogi Bear's character first appeared on the Hanna-Barbera classic Huckleberry Hound in 1958. Yogi's character proved to be more popular than Huckleberry Hound™ himself, which led to Yogi receiving his own TV show in 1961. Yogi Bear was voiced by Daws Bulter, who voiced other Hanna-Barbera characters as well. Yogi Bear was featured in cartoons from the 1960s to the early 1990s, with beloved characters such as Yogi's sidekick, Boo Boo Bear™, the loyal park Ranger Smith™, and Yogi's girlfriend, Cindy Bear™. He even starred in his own movie in 1964, called Hey There, It's Yogi Bear. There have been several reboots of Yogi Bear in the last several decades. The most recent was in 2010 with a live-action movie starring Dan Aykroyd and Justin Timberlake as the voices of Yogi Bear and Boo Boo.

Though it's commonly believed that Yogi Bear was named after the famous Yankee's catcher Yogi Berra, Hanna and Barbera claimed that the similarities were just a coincidence. In fact, Yogi Berra sued Hanna-Barbera Productions for defamation but eventually dropped the suit.

Jellystone Park™ Camp-Resorts

Once The Yogi Bear Show gained popularity, it was only natural that Jellystone Park would become a real-life camping destination. The story of how Jellystone Park opened started far away from our own Louisiana campground. The first Jellystone Park opened in April 1969 in Manitowoc, Wisconsin and was founded by Doug Haag. Haag wanted to provide a place for families to enjoy camping that was a destination to visit, not a stop on a long journey. Haag knew he wanted to give his campground a well-known and recognizable name, but he and his associates had several ideas before finding the perfect fit. These names included Robin Hood, Hiawatha, and Pocahontas. Then, one Saturday morning while Haag's children were watching Yogi Bear on TV, Haag knew Jellystone Park would be a great fit for his campground. Haag flew to New York City to meet with Yogi Bear's licensors and pitched them his campground/resort concept. Luckily, they agreed and Jellystone Park became a reality. In the years that followed, more Jellystone Park campgrounds opened up in California, Florida, Wisconsin, and—of course—Louisiana! Since then, The Jellystone Park franchise has grown into the second largest campground franchise in the country with over 75 locations in North America. You can learn more about the history of Jellystone Park here.
